Woodland Walk

Sunday, 29 September 2013

Today I did The Pingo Trail in Norfolk and it was such nice weather it's a 4.5km walk and I used it as an opportunity to unearth natural textures for the term ahead.

New Job at JoJo Maman Bebe

I was so pleased to start my new job as a tempoary customer adviser at JoJo Maman Bebe in Norwich. It's a chain boutique baby and maternity wear store with the most gorgeous things in. I am currently training and learning so much about retail as well as parenthood. The team are absolutely lovely and I'm really enjoying working there ( only done 2 days but has been great.

More London

My lovely boyfriend came to London the day after my birthday and the last day of my internship. I said my goodbyes to Sarah and we went off for a night at The Wardorf Hotel and a lovely steak dinner at Tuttons. The next day we did loads of shopping and he treated me to a gorgeous ring from Tiffany and Co.

Birthday Shop in Soho and Oxford Circus

It was my birthday whilst I was in London and my lovely friend Nic came on the coach from Norwich and met me which made my birthday super special. We walked through Chinatown and Soho going in and out of fabric shops along Berwick St . I had never been before and it was a great exposure to what fabrics are around at the moment I also purchased a design/photography/art/lifestyle magazine called 'Frankie'. I love the illustrations and photography and now I want a subscripition . The articles are also very interesting.
We shopped around till our feet where sore then both headed to Decorex where I showed Nic round and showed him what I had been doing. We then said goodbye and I carried on working at the trade show for the rest of the day.

Liberty London

I got the opportunity to visit Libertys whilst in London which is an absolute heaven for us textiley students. The old building with wooden features against exquiste fabrics and prints creates an upmarket and exclusive feel. I love everything about the store from the amazing architecture to the vintage handbags and new innovative fabrics and textures inside.

I took these few photographs because I loved the bright colours against the subtle stone neutrals. The rustics silvers look beautiful and really complinent the floristry.

Polly Rowan

Amoungst the maddness of woring at Decorex I recieved the most helpful email from my favorite blogger...Polly Rowan of arowantree blog. She has recently graduated and keeps a really interesting blog about textiles, lifestyle and influences it's where I always go when I start new projects for inspiration. So recieving an email off her was pretty exciting.
I asked her a million question about creating a good blog and gathering a following and she gave me so so many useful hints and tips . But mainly I need to invest in a really good camera and edit my pictures so they are more interesting and appealing. So as soon as I have saved enough I am buying a good camera.

Decorex Show Inspiration

Saturday, 28 September 2013
I got the chance to have a few hours off in-between working which was great as I got to look round the whole show for my own personal inspiration. I loved so many different things from innovative bathroom suites to beautiful vintage linens by Emily Bond.
The show really showed me how to show off your work and how to present it to an audience ( not too just rush and slam it in a portfolio) so I have loads of ideas whizzing round my head for when I finally graduate.

Working at Decorex

The next few days involved me working on the stand opening trade accounts and organising sending out samples for clients. We were very busy so I had my work cut out but luckily I had learnt a lot from the previous trade show CABMFF so I had more of an idea with regards to colour waves , names of fabrics and pricing.

Sarah Hardaker Ltd also described me as their 'super star intern' and posted a photo and comment on their facebook which I was really flattered by.

Decorex - Setting up the Stand

So when we arrived at Decorex we had a lot to do . We were greeted by plain white walls and had to transform them into a show stand reflecting Sarah Hardaker's unique vintage brand. I took a few setting up pics to give you the feel for what it was like.
We painted the stand Little Greene Portland Stone and custom coloured the two wallpapers; toile and chimosorie to Portland Stone as well. With a brown rattan carpet. So the whole stand came together beautifully and was a lovely neutral tone to show off the fabrics.

Internship day 3 & 4

Saturday, 21 September 2013
So I haven't been on top of my blog as I have been so busy !
So day 3 & 4 were the last two days I spent in gloustershire . I got press packs ready, trade packs together and learnt how to make a cushion with an invisible zip. I also hemmed the fabrics for the show.

I also took a trip into the local town Nailsworth. Which had some beautiful buildings . A real quaint Cotswolds town.

Internship Day 2

Tuesday, 17 September 2013

Had another fantastic day working for Sarah Hardaker! I learnt about putting together samples, postcard packs and organising pattern books ...all the things you need for a trade show.

It was a really great eye opener , although I won't be doing anything like Decorex like Sarah for a good few years it made me think about presentation for my degree show and my work in general.
I'm definitely going to invest in a rotary cutter for cutting samples and I'd really like some wooden hangers to create waterfall hangers of my work with my name engraved on the hanger. I feel these elements will make my work have a more professional feel. I'm also going to take a lot more care photographing my work so I would invest in some lovely postcards for my degree show.

Sarah also made me the delicious lunch in the photo. Couldn't resist not putting it on here!

Sarah also gave me a great idea to stay in contact with people in industry ...sending Christmas cards with my work on them and giving them invites to my degree show in the post with some of my postcards / mini samples!

I have had a lot of ideas today and feel really motivated to get back in the studio when uni starts!

Internship Day 1

So it was my first day at Sarah Hardaker today and I had such a fantastic day.
I was in at the deep end ( and I was pretty nervous ) at the CABMFF trade networking event. Opening trade accounts with Sarah and listening to her so I can pick up tips and information about her business for next week at Decorex.

I chatted to a lot of people in the trade and got a few business cards and it was so good to get an insight into the real world of textiles.

I established today that I would really love to be a designer! I wouldn't enjoy a job where I couldn't be creative and I feel that buying or interior design isn't free enough to express my creativity. I would ideally want to work for a company as I think going solo is very scary.

I've Arrived

Sunday, 15 September 2013
So, I've arrived in gloustershire ahead of my internship starting tomorrow at Sarah Hardaker.
I have been looking through all the notes Sarah has sent me and re reading emails to log everything she has explained to me already.
Tomorrow I am meeting her at CABMFF at Cheltenham Racecourse which is a huge networking event for interiors . She's already mentioned I will be meeting some of her contacts, so I am pretty nervous . But very excited !

Fingers crossed everything goes well tomorrow.

Cod Cakes

Friday, 13 September 2013

Tonight I had the most beautiful cod cakes made by my mums partner. They were so light and so tasty we had them with a gorgeous salsa salad and sour dough loaf available to make a fish cake sandwich. The perks of being at home and having proper meals!

They were too good not to blog! A healthy and tasty tea , however I am now tucking into a sleeker box of hotel chocolates whilst I do my mountain of ironing for my internship next week . As well as trying to discipline myself to one outfit a day so I don't ravel heavy!

p.s sorry about another food post !
